Walking for Health.

Walking is one of the best and most natural types of low-impact exercise.  It is a convenient way to improve your health while seeing the sites in your community.   All you need are good walking shoes & maybe an umbrella, jacket, or walking buddy.

If you don't have time for a planned walk, try to add as much walking as you can to your daily life.  This can be done by:
  • parking a few blocks from work, school, or the store.
  • Take the stairs when you have the option.
  • You can also take a quick walk around the block on your breaks from tasks or work.
There are many health benefits from walking.  It can help you manage weight and improve muscle strength.   Regular exercise can help people control blood sugar levels and reduce cardiovascular risks.
New research published in Stroke:  Journal of the American Heart Association  reports that 2+ hours of walking per week (especially at a brisk pace) can reduce a woman's risk of stroke.   Although this research was specific to women, walking most likely has a similar health benefit for men.
